AEO agency vs AI visibility software: which is better?
6 min read · updated October 28, 2026

An AEO agency or AI visibility software: for most small and mid-sized teams, software is the better first buy and an agency the better second one. Software shows which buyer questions you lose in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and other AI engines, and who wins them, for $50 to $1,000+ a month by WebFX's estimate. An agency does the work of changing those answers, and most charge $3,000 to $15,000 a month, according to 310 Creative, or $10,000 to $20,000 for mid-market B2B software companies, according to Discovered Labs. Disclosure: Geofound sells AI visibility software, so weigh our view with that in mind.
What does an AEO agency do, and what does AI visibility software do?
AI visibility software is an in-house tool: it runs your buyer questions through AI engines on a schedule and records the answers: whether your brand is named, which competitors are named instead, and which pages the engine cited. Some tools add recommendations, content drafts or crawler logs; Geofound also adds competitor SEO and paid search research. The software measures and suggests. Your team still edits the pages, publishes the content and asks other sites for coverage.
An AEO agency (some call it a GEO agency) sells that work as an outsourced service, with its own strategists and writers. 310 Creative's pricing guide lists what a typical retainer covers: schema markup on key page types, recurring content written for answer engines, and off-site citation building through digital PR. Its entry packages, by the same guide, cover the basics: FAQ schema on key pages, monitoring a single AI platform and restructuring a handful of existing pages.
| Job | AI visibility software (in-house) | AEO agency (outsourced) |
|---|---|---|
| Show who AI names for your buyer questions | Yes, on a schedule | Reports on it |
| Change your pages and schema | Suggests; your team does it | Does it |
| Get you named on other sites | Shows which sources are cited | Does it, through digital PR |
| Typical monthly cost | $50 to $1,000+; $99 to $399 for mid-tier platforms | $3,000 to $15,000; $10,000 to $20,000 for mid-market B2B |
| Cost to start | Geofound charges no setup fee; Geofound and Profound offer free 7-day trials | A one-time audit ($1,500 to $5,000) or a setup fee ($2,500 to $12,000+) |
| Who holds the data | You do, and you can export it (CSV on Geofound) | Set by the contract: ask for raw exports, not only report decks |
| How fast you see a change | At the next tracking run: daily on Geofound | At the next report: ask how often that is |
Costs: WebFX and 310 Creative (software); 310 Creative and Discovered Labs (agencies, audits and setup fees). All three publishers sell AEO services.
How much does each cost?
Most AEO agencies charge $3,000 to $15,000 a month, according to 310 Creative, with entry packages from $1,000 to $3,500. WebFX puts the full agency range at $1,500 to $50,000+ a month, and $1,500 to $5,000 for a small business. Discovered Labs, itself an AEO agency, puts mid-market B2B software retainers at $10,000 to $20,000 a month on 6 to 12 month contracts, with setup fees of $2,500 to $12,000+. AI visibility software costs $50 to $1,000+ a month by WebFX's estimate, and $99 to $399 for mid-tier platforms by 310 Creative's; Geofound is $39 a month on Starter and $169 on Growth, and Geofound and Profound both offer a free 7-day trial.
The low end of each published range. Software: Geofound's pricing page, WebFX and 310 Creative. Agencies: WebFX (small business), 310 Creative (entry packages; most agencies) and Discovered Labs (mid-market B2B). All three guides are published by agencies that sell AEO services.
All three price guides come from agencies that sell AEO and GEO services (WebFX's guide, published 15 October 2026; 310 Creative's, updated August 2026; and Discovered Labs', updated December 2025), so read them as published estimates rather than market surveys. We did not find an independent survey of AEO agency fees.
The two prices also buy different things. A $169 subscription does not write a page or pitch a journalist, and an agency retainer may already include its own tracking software. WebFX's budget table counts software as an extra cost on top of agency fees when you buy the two separately.
When is AI visibility software the better choice?
Software is the better choice when:
- You do not yet know which questions you lose. Hiring an agency before you have a baseline means paying it to find out, and then relying on its own report of its progress.
- Someone on your team can edit pages and publish. Many fixes are page changes: a pricing page that hides the price, a comparison page that does not exist, a product page that never says who it is for. Our guide to which pages to improve first shows how to choose.
- Your budget is below an agency's entry package. At $1,000 a month or less, a subscription plus your own time buys more evidence than a cut-down retainer.
- You need several engines. 310 Creative notes that entry packages may monitor a single AI platform, and different engines can name different brands for the same question.
When is an AEO agency the better choice?
An agency is the better choice when:
- Nobody on your team has time to write, restructure pages or pitch. A tool that finds ten gaps a month is no use if none of them get fixed.
- The gap is off your site. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest link to AI Overview mentions (0.664) and backlinks the weakest (0.218). Getting named on review sites, roundups and forums is outreach and PR work, which agencies sell. Our SEO vs GEO guide covers that study, and getting cited by AI covers the sources assistants use.
- You work across many regions or languages. 310 Creative puts multi-region programs in its premium tier, from $15,000 a month.
Spearman correlation with AI Overview brand mentions. Correlation is not causation. Mentions on other sites are off-site work, which is the work agencies sell.
Can you use both?

Yes, and if you can afford an agency it is usually the right setup. Keep your own tracking while the agency does the work, so the before and after numbers do not come only from the people paid to move them. 310 Creative says a proposal should list the AI platforms covered: at minimum Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Bing Copilot. Before you sign, ask the agency:
- Which AI engines does it track, and how often?
- Which buyer questions will it report on, and who chose them?
- What did those questions show before the work started?
- What will change on your site each month, and what will change off it?
- Who owns the raw tracking data, and can you export it if you leave?
How to decide in a week
- Write down 10 to 25 questions a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours. Our guide to finding the prompts your buyers ask shows how.
- Run them through the engines your buyers use, with software or by hand, and record who is named.
- Sort each loss: is the fix on your site (a missing or weak page) or off it (you are absent from the sources the engine cites)?
- If most fixes are on your site and you have someone to make them, buy software. If most are off-site, or nobody has the time, hire an agency and keep your own tracking.
Sort each lost question first: a missing or weak page is on your site; being absent from the sources an engine cites is off it.

FAQ
Is an AEO agency worth it for a small business? Only once you know what needs fixing and cannot do it yourself. WebFX puts small-business agency fees at $1,500 to $5,000 a month, so measure first: a month of tracking shows whether the work is mostly on your site, which you can do, or off it, which is where an agency earns its fee.
How much does AI visibility software cost? WebFX estimates $50 to $1,000+ a month for AI visibility tracking software, depending on how many prompts and engines you track, and 310 Creative puts mid-tier platforms at $99 to $399. Geofound costs $39 a month on Starter and $169 on Growth; Profound's Enterprise pricing is custom.
Do AEO agencies charge an onboarding fee? Many start with a one-time audit before any retainer. 310 Creative puts a one-time AI visibility audit at $1,500 to $5,000 and says smaller companies often begin there. Discovered Labs says many agencies charge $2,500 to $12,000+ upfront for audits, strategy and technical setup. Software usually has no setup cost: Geofound charges no setup fee, and Geofound and Profound both offer a free 7-day trial.
Can AI visibility software replace an AEO agency? It replaces the measurement and part of the diagnosis. It does not write pages, fix schema or win coverage on other sites; someone still has to do that work.
What is the difference between an AEO agency and a GEO agency? Mostly the label. Both sell work aimed at getting a brand named in AI answers. Our SEO vs GEO and AEO guide explains how the terms are used.
